Managing Your HVAC System

Four Things To Check Before Calling A Heating Repair Company For Your Gas Heater

If your gas heating system is not working, you will probably need to call a heating repair company. However, if you just bought the house and you're not familiar with the particular heating system you now have, there are a few basic things that you can check before calling for a repair.

Check your pilot light

This is something that can blow out during the summer months, or it may have been shut off when spring arrived by someone else in the house. You may have turned it off and forgot. It is a simple matter to check. You should be able to see the flame, if it's on. If there is no light, there will usually be instructions near the starter button or on the button. If not, the process is simple. First, make sure the gas is turned on, then simply push the starter switch. It will make a clicking sound and will ignite your pilot light.

Check your power

If your thermostat is blank, then you will need to change the batteries. This assumes that your thermostat is a battery-operated device. However, batteries for a thermostat can last many years. If you see a display, then you will want to check the power to the furnace. To do this, you need to check that the fan is working properly. Simply set your thermostat to on instead of auto. Your fan should turn on. If not, you may have an issue with the power. Check the furnace to see if it is plugged in. If it is, then check your circuit breaker to see if one is tripped. However, if the fan turns on, your power is fine.

Check your thermostat

If the fan is working but there is no heat, you need to call a service technician. But if you get heat, the next step is to check the auto feature. Simply set the device to auto, then you will need to set the temperature to a higher setting than the temperature reading of the thermostat. It may take a minute, but it should click on. If not, you may have a bad thermostat.

Check your filter

If everything works but you have little heat flowing out of the register, you need to check your filter. This is something that should be changed every month, but you have no idea how long it has been since the previous owner changed the filter. It is possible that it is so dirty that much of the airflow is being stopped.

These are just of few things you can check, but if it isn't something simple like those items mentioned above, you will need to call for heating repair.
